La nostra lingua, a cui il sentire comune attribuisce una fisionomia stabile e riconoscibile a partire da Dante, ha faticato molto a trovare una dimensione a tuttotondo in cui potessero riconoscersi tutti gli italiani. Per secoli il problema prevalente è stato il rapporto tra il latino e i vari volgari presenti nella penisola e solo con l'invenzione della stampa è emersa l'esigenza di un'unità linguistica nazionale. A lungo declinata come ricerca di una lingua comune agli scrittori è soltanto a partire dal 1861, con l'unità politica, che la questione dell'italiano riacquista una dimensione più ampiamente sociale. In un viaggio nel tempo che va dal 476 d.C. a oggi, il volume focalizza i punti di svolta di questa lunga ricerca, soffermandosi sulle tappe significative del percorso, dal Placito campano, l'atto notarile che nel 960 certifica la nascita del volgare italiano, a "Lettera a una professoressa".
