Il Dictionnaire historique et critique di Pierre Bayle è stato uno dei testi-archetipi della 'cultura dei moderni' e ha influenzato molteplici generazioni, costruendo dei canoni critici che hanno inciso a fondo sull'interpretazione dei principali esponenti della cultura europea, studiati, e proposti, attraverso un giudizio che intreccia considerazioni storiche e motivazioni di carattere etico-politico e anche religioso.
