¿Por qué el tema de "el doble" ha sido preferido por autores y lectores a lo largo del tiempo? En última instancia me pregunto a mí mismo por qué este tema ha sido de interés infatigable para mí. ¿Es que toca un tema universal? ¿Es "el doble" un verdadero fantasma de todos los seres humanos? ¿Es un gran mito creado por el cerebro humano? La lectura y la relectura de estos cuentos me ha planteado diversas preguntas. Sospecho que toca el corazón de la elección del tema en la narrativa y también que toca lo más íntimo del Yo del narrador. La apabullante conclusión es que los cuentos de "el doble" tocan una fibra sensible de todos los seres humanos- en estos cuentos siempre se encuentra algo de uno mismo. ¿Tenemos todos un doble? Si tenemos un inconsciente o tenemos un alma, la respuesta a esta pregunta es indudablemente positiva. —Bruno Estañol-
