Nella casa per ferie marine "Buon Riposo", gestita da suore, un uomo muore in circostanze sospette. Un vescovo e uno scrittore, lì in vacanza, ricorrono all'aiuto dell'amico Marè per chiarire la faccenda, scoprire in fretta l'assassino e allontanare dalla casa sospetti e maldicenze. Le indagini porteranno alla scoperta della doppia e losca vita dell'uomo ucciso e, alla fine, della triste realtà che ha portato alla sua uccisione. Ma, insieme a uno spaccato significativo della "varia umanità" temporaneamente riunita perle vacanze, metteranno anche in luce uno strano intreccio di rapporti fra alcuni villeggianti della Casa. Questo intreccio prenderàsignificato allorché, cinque mesi dopo, nella vicina cittadina di Ladiano, troverà la morte una persona impegnata al "Buon Riposo" connessa, in qualità di testimone, col primo omicidio. Spostate le indagini a Ladiano Mare, con l'aiuto di vecchi e nuovi amici investigatori, scoprirà l'ordito di un nuovo intrigo a base economica e finanziaria e, naturalmente, farà luce anche sul secondo assassinio.
